The only way to become one with another language is by immersing yourself in the heart of it. You have to put yourself out there, maybe embarrass yourself, and speak in Spanish. During this project, that is what we had to do. It was awesome to go out independently and meet somebody who has a completely different lifestyle then myself. I hope that one day I will be dreaming in the Spanish language and this project was just another step in me reaching that goal.
Its important to know the people and cultures that surround you to add to your sense of curiosity and awareness about the world. During this project, we got to meet and learn about a whole new part of the community that we live in. This has given me more of an open mind about the immigrants in the United States. This is very important to me because I know immigrants in Durango that live, struggle, and thrive here. I want to be able to get there stories out and have other community members be more aware in helping these individuals follow their dreams.

Me duele.

Two Houses, Two Hearts
“My heart is split in four. Two parts here and two in Mexico. My heart hurts. It is very difficult.”
Amanda said this in her apartment as she was talking about the difficulties of having two kids in America and two in Mexico. In the background you could hear the sounds of Mexican cartoons and her two kids running around. On her snowy front porch, she was boiling beans.
Immigrants from all over the world leave their familiar lives and come to the United States to create a better life for themselves and their families. Amanda is one of those immigrants. She left her life in Chiapas, Mexico and started a new life thousands of miles from her house, without anyone’s help.
To come to and arrive in the United States was not easy. It took a lot of bravery and force to come. Amanda has now been living in the United States for nine years. During these nine years, she has begun a new family with two kids and a husband. She has a comfortable apartment with her family. Amanda said, “My kids are in Mexico. It’s been almost nine years that I haven’t seen my kids. It’s very hard.”
There are close to 38 million immigrants in the United States and many of them are in the same situation as Amanda. The immigrants that come sacrifice a lot, and Amanda is a perfect example of this. When she was living in Mexico, she received thirty dollars per week. This is not enough for a whole family. Immigrants come here because of they’ve seen the success of those who have gone to live in the United States. Amanda realized this, and knew that if she came she would be able to create a better life for her family.
The idea of coming to live in the United States is much brighter than the reality. It is a very difficult journey, especially when you are doing it illegally. In Amanda’s case, she had to walk through the desert for two whole days. She said, “I could only think, ‘we have to get there.’ My feet were full of blisters. I didn’t think I was going to make it. I didn’t think I would be able to walk.” Amanda sacrificed a lot, and will always be running the risk of being captured for coming to the United States without documents.
Amanda has created a completely different life in the United States. This doesn’t mean that it’s easy. Amanda’s children that live in Mexico don’t recognize her as their mother because she isn’t there with them. Amanda said, “They do talk to me, but what can I give them if I don’t have rights with them. When I talk with my son on the phone he calls me, ‘Amanda’ and my mom has to tell them, ‘No, she is your mom, call her mom.’ and then he says, ‘ah ok mom.’ It hurts. I hope that one day they will be able to come here.”
The difficulties of being here have calmed down but it’s still not easy. The separation of families is a sad reality for many of the immigrants in the United States. Amanda doesn’t have the opportunity to return to Mexico. She said, “I want to return but I don’t want to go backwards. I don’t want to walk in the desert again.” The only thing that she can do is to have hope for her kids and her family.
Amanda has two distinct and precious lives. Amanda has to wait while her heart grows with love in one portion, and accept the yearning for a life lost, where she will never know her kids, in the other portion. We have to remember that there are many people like Amanda that overcome their losses and have the courage to start a new life.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
During this year we have been learning about the controversies around the world. The first controversy that we uncovered was the Running of the Bulls and whether or not this tradition should continue. Many people believe that this tradition should never die, whereas others believe this to be a cruel celebration that should change. In my spanish class, we learned about the pros and cons towards this problem, wrote essays concerning our beliefs towards the matter, and then had a heated discussion based on our own opinions.
Later in the year, Becca allowed us to create a group of students and present a controversy that we found interesting. My group chose the controversy over the coca lief in South America. This is a very interesting topic to me because many people chew this lief daily and it has never caused any type of issue until the demand of cocaine became higher. If the coca lief is taken away from the indigenous people and many others, there would be an uproar. Nobody in the world knows what to do about this, all I can do is hope that the people that are addicted to cocaine do not take away an important tradition and religion from the people that have used the coca lief their whole lives.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The final controversy that my Spanish class uncovered was about the DREAM Act. This is a bill that would primarily allow illegal immigrants to be able to stay in the United States and go to school if they had no criminal record and fit the standards of this bill. This law would positively change the lives of millions of people without papers. These people will finally have the chance to be who they want without being scared of being deported. The United States is a country that prides themselves on diversity and economic accomplishments. Passing this bill will not only be a thoughtful but also a brave leap into the beginning of a new generation. We wrote cards to certain senators in the United States telling them our reasons and opinions on why we believe these immigrants should have a chance to prosper in the United States of America.

Escribiendo a Marco Rubio

In my Humanities class we have been studying economics and government. For the project that we were given I received Marco Rubio to impersonate at our Mock Senate. He is a conservative Senator from Florida. His parents came to the United States from Cuba in 1956. I found it incredibly surprising that Rubio was not in favor of the DREAM Act. He knows that it takes a lot of work to end up where you want in this world. A lot of the time it makes it significantly harder to become somebody important when you are from another country and do not have a lot of financial support. I wrote to him because I am very interested in why he doesn't support this Act when he comes from a very similar situation. My card to him is below:

Estimado Sr. Rubio,
Sinceramente,
Corazón Kilgo

Letter in English:
Dear Marco Rubio,
My name is Corazón Kilgo and I am 17 years old. I am in full support for the DREAM Act. In my Spanish class we have been learning about this bill and the rights that Latinos are going to gain. The DREAM Act is very important for the future of many undocumented immigrants. Many people that live in our community will be affected. People living here without papers, live in fear every day of their life. These people should have the opportunity to flourish in the United States and not worry about being deported.
Some people in the U.S. live in fear of being deported. They can not cross the street or drive without fear that the police will stop them and deport them. Between ten and twenty million illegal immigrants live in the United States and should be able to live here without being molested (Illegal Immigration Facts). We cannot afford to not meet their aspirations, and to continue a life of frustrated hopes. They cannot live a normal life. I think people should embrace being Latina with trust and integrity.
Undocumented Latino People should have the opportunity to work, have a good future for themselves and their children and to be educated. With the DREAM Act, the immigrants will be able to go to college. It is not their fault for being in the United States, their parents brought them here. Laura Lopez, a woman who came to the U.S. when he was two years old said, "I feel very limited, and I know my parents do not want this for me because I have worked hard so that I would not be working in a restaurant, but the reality is that I have no other choice (The Dream Act). "She wants to have the same opportunities that all Americans have and being from another country should not affect your dreams.
The majority of Latino children have lived in the U.S. for all their lives. They speak English, have taken classes with friends here, and should be able to live in peace where they grew up. They are not criminals like the conservative critics are saying. The students that will benefit from the DREAM Act are good students, athletes, and leaders. It's the only place they know as home. They should not be punished for wanting to be educated. These children should be welcomed to the United States with open arms.
After reading this and realizing how many people will be affected by passing the DREAM Act, I hope you can help me. Color and nationality should not influence what you want to do in this life. The result of passing this law would be a new generation of college graduates that would help increase our economic security and would be incredibly contributors. This is important because all people should have opportunities in their lives.
Sincerely,
Corazón Kilgo

Sincerely,

I’ve been speaking Spanish ever since I could remember. My parents always tried speaking to me in Spanish, especially when I was in trouble. Because of this, it is a lot harder for me to write in Spanish then to actually speak. I have never really focused on learning the grammatical part of writing or speaking in Spanish because it has always come naturally. I have made a promise to myself that I will keep trying, and will improve.
In the next semester, I would really like to keep focusing on my writing skills. This is important me because I want to know every form of Spanish. I want to be able to dream in Spanish one day. This is the first year that I have actually dedicated myself to this class and I would like to keep this motivation up.
I think that my abilities to read, write and speak in Spanish have significantly improved. While we were learning about the controversies in the world, we would read articles and watch YouTube videos in Spanish. This allowed me to improve the speed and cohesiveness of understanding it. I am proud of the work that I have put in this year.
